Dollar Tree Pop-Tart Valentine Craft (With Free Printable Tag!)

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays to craft for. There’s just something so fun about creating sweet little handmade gifts that make people smile. If you love affordable DIY projects that still feel creative and special, this Dollar Tree Pop-Tart Valentine is going to be right up your alley!

Not only is this project budget-friendly, but it’s also super easy to make — which means it’s perfect for classroom Valentines, party favors, or even a fun afternoon craft to do with your kids. Plus, I created an adorable printable tag to go along with it that you can download and use yourself!

Let me show you how to make these adorable Valentine treats step-by-step.

Why You’ll Love This DIY Valentine

This craft checks all the boxes:

These handmade Valentines look thoughtful and unique while still being incredibly simple to put together.

Supplies You’ll Need

Most of these items can be found at Dollar Tree or in your craft stash:

Step 1: Cut Out Your Pop-Tart Shape

Start by cutting two matching rectangular pieces from your paper bag. These will form the front and back of your Pop-Tart.

Pro Tip:
Flip the bag pieces so you are using the inside of the bag as the outside of your Pop-Tart. This gives you a cleaner and more uniform look.

Step 2: Draw the Frosting

Using a pencil, freehand a frosting shape on the front piece. Draw a curved border around the top, leaving a small edge to mimic the crust of a real Pop-Tart.

Don’t worry about making it perfect — real icing is slightly messy, which actually helps make this craft look more realistic and charming.

Step 3: Paint the Frosting

If you don’t have pink paint, you can easily mix your own using red and white paint. That’s exactly what I did!

Carefully paint inside your frosting outline using your custom pink color. Once your first coat dries, apply a second coat to create a nice, smooth finish.

Step 4: Add Sprinkles

Now comes the fun part — decorating!

Using a flat edge brush, dip it into your paint and gently press it straight up and down onto the frosting to create sprinkle shapes.

Switch colors and rotate your brush in different directions to give your sprinkles a natural and playful look. Purple, magenta, and bright Valentine colors work beautifully for this step.

Step 5: Assemble Your Pop-Tart

Place your two paper bag pieces together and use hot glue to seal three sides — the left, right, and bottom.

Make sure to leave the top open so you can add your candy filling.

Step 6: Add the Candy Surprise

Once your glue has set, open the top and add your popping candy inside. The popping candy adds a fun and unexpected interactive element that kids absolutely love.

Fill it as much or as little as you’d like depending on your preference.

Then glue the top closed.

Step 7: Attach the Valentine Tag

Punch two holes at the top of your Pop-Tart.

Next, punch a hole in your printable Valentine tag that reads:

“Hey Valentine! I’m so glad you popped into my life!”

Thread yarn or string through the holes and tie a simple bow to attach the tag.

Trim the ends of the yarn and your Valentine is complete!

Step 8: Download the Free Printable Tag

I designed this adorable Pop-Tart Valentine tag in Canva so you can easily print your own.
