The holiday season is upon us, and for many, that means it’s time to start thinking about decorating and getting into the festive spirit. If you’re like me, one of the best parts of the Christmas season is the hunt for unique, one-of-a-kind decor pieces that can transform your home into a winter wonderland. And where better to find those hidden gems than at the local thrift store?
In this blog post, I’m excited to take you along on my thrifting adventures as I scour the aisles for vintage Christmas treasures. Not only will I show you my haul of thrifted finds, but I’ll also walk you through a few easy DIY projects to breathe new life into these thrifted items and turn them into stunning holiday decor.
Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or new to the game, you’re sure to find some inspiration to infuse your home with Christmas charm on a budget.
Thrifting for Christmas Nostalgia
As I mentioned in my video, I have a deep love for all things nostalgic when it comes to Christmas. The holidays have a way of transporting us back to the magical moments of our childhood, and for me, that means embracing the vintage, retro aesthetic of Christmases past. When I’m thrifting, I’m always on the lookout for pieces that evoke that sense of nostalgia – the kind of items that remind me of the Christmases I used to know growing up.
One of my first stops was the Mission Thrift Store, where I stumbled upon a beautiful glass serving tray adorned with classic Christmas bells. As soon as I laid eyes on it, I was instantly transported back to my childhood, remembering how my mom and grandparents would display similar platters during the holiday season.

At just $1.50, this was an absolute steal, and I knew it would be the perfect addition to my Christmas entertaining setup.
- Vintage-inspired glass serving tray with Christmas bell design
- Reminds me of the holiday platters used by my mom and grandparents
- Thrifted for only $1.50 – a true bargain!
Another thrifted find that captured my heart was a set of house shelf sitters. While not overtly Christmas-themed, I knew I could easily transform these into festive decor pieces with a little DIY magic. At just $3 each, these houses had so much potential, and I couldn’t wait to put my crafting skills to the test.

- Unassuming ceramic house figurines, thrifted for $3 each
- Perfect blank canvas for a Christmas-themed DIY project
- Opportunity to tap into my love for vintage, nostalgic holiday decor
As I continued my thrifting journey, I stumbled upon even more items that evoked that warm, fuzzy feeling of Christmas past. From a set of vintage-inspired Christmas bells to a charming little dish adorned with holly berries, each discovery felt like unearthing a hidden treasure trove of holiday nostalgia. And with prices that were almost too good to be true, I knew I had to scoop up these thrifted gems and find ways to incorporate them into my holiday decor.
Transforming Thrifted Finds into Christmas Crafts
One of the best parts about thrifting is the opportunity to unleash your creativity and transform ordinary items into something extraordinary. And when it comes to Christmas decor, the possibilities are endless! In this section, I’ll walk you through a few of the DIY projects I tackled using my thrifted finds, proving that with a little imagination and some crafting know-how, you can turn even the most unassuming thrift store items into stunning holiday decor.
Upcycled Lamp Shade Ornaments
As I mentioned earlier, I stumbled upon a pair of vintage-style lamp shades at the thrift store, and I knew they had the potential to become something truly special.

By repurposing these lamp shades and adding a few simple embellishments, I was able to create a pair of beautiful, one-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments that would be the perfect addition to my holiday decor.
- Thrifted vintage-style lamp shades, $1 each
- Transformed into unique Christmas ornaments using Gorilla Glue and a rustic bell
- Added decorative touches like paper straws and a Dollar Tree pick for a festive finish
- Total cost of the project: under $7
To bring these lamp shade ornaments to life, I first removed the ends of the toilet paper holder I had also thrifted, giving me the perfect topper for the lamp shades. I then used Gorilla Glue to attach the toilet paper holder ends to the lamp shades, securing them in place with a bit of hot glue as well.

Next, I added a rustic bell to the inside of each ornament, using a simple tape “needle” trick to thread the rope through the small opening.
To add a finishing touch, I incorporated some paper straws and a Dollar Tree pick, wrapping the rope around the straws to create a decorative element at the top. The result is a stunning, one-of-a-kind ornament that perfectly blends vintage charm with a touch of rustic elegance.

And at a total cost of under $7, this project is proof that thrifting and a little creativity can lead to some truly remarkable holiday decor.
Vintage-Inspired Christmas House Decor
Another thrifted find that I was excited to transform was the set of unassuming house shelf sitters. While they may have seemed like ordinary decor pieces at first glance, I knew I could turn them into something truly special with a little bit of crafting magic.
- Thrifted house shelf sitters, $3 each
- Transformed into vintage-inspired Christmas decor using sheet music, glitter, and greenery
- Incorporated nostalgic elements like rusty bells and Dollar Tree picks
- Total cost of the project: under $10
To begin, I carefully removed the fine glitter that was already on the houses, ensuring a clean surface for my DIY. I then cut down some sheet music pages to fit inside the houses, using 3D foam tape to give them a bit of dimension and depth.

To add a touch of holiday sparkle, I applied a layer of tacky glue to the sheet music and sprinkled on some diamond sugar dust glitter, focusing on the title and music notes for a subtle, elegant effect.

To complete the vintage-inspired look, I added a sprig of greenery from a Dollar Tree pick, as well as a pair of rusty bells that I had wired together. The result is a charming, one-of-a-kind Christmas decoration that perfectly captures the nostalgic spirit of the holiday season. And at just under $10 for the entire project, it’s a thrifty and creative way to bring a touch of vintage charm to your home.

Gilded Thrifted Candle Holders
The final thrifted project I tackled was a simple yet stunning transformation of a pair of wall sconce candle holders. While they may have seemed a bit dated at first, a quick coat of black spray paint and some rub-and-buff gilding turned these thrifted finds into the perfect addition to my holiday decor.

- Thrifted wall sconce candle holders, $3.50 each
- Transformed with black spray paint and gold rub-and-buff
- Adds an antique, ornate touch to my holiday display
- Total cost of the project: under $15
The key to this project was addressing the shiny, reflective surface of the candle holders before applying the rub-and-buff. By first giving them a coat of black spray paint, I was able to create the perfect base for the gold gilding to really pop and take on an antique, ornate appearance.

The rub-and-buff went on smoothly, and the end result is a pair of stunning candle holders that look like they could have been plucked straight from a vintage Christmas display.

I’m envisioning these gilded candle holders flanking a large Christmas picture or perhaps adorned with a bit of greenery for an extra festive touch. The possibilities are endless, and I can’t wait to see how they’ll fit into my overall holiday decor scheme. At a total cost of under $15, this project is proof that a little bit of thrifting and elbow grease can go a long way in creating beautiful, budget-friendly Christmas decor.
Embracing the Thrifting Mindset for the Holidays
As you can see from the projects I’ve shared, thrifting can be an absolute goldmine when it comes to finding unique, one-of-a-kind pieces to incorporate into your holiday decor. But beyond just the thrifted items themselves, I think there’s a valuable mindset that comes with embracing the thrifting lifestyle, especially during the Christmas season.

Too often, we can get caught up in the idea that holiday decor has to be expensive or brand-new to be beautiful. But the truth is, some of the most charming and nostalgic pieces can be found at our local thrift stores, just waiting to be given new life. By approaching your Christmas decorating with a thrifting mindset, you open yourself up to a world of creative possibilities and the chance to infuse your home with truly personal, meaningful touches.

So, the next time you’re tempted to head to the big-box stores in search of holiday decor, I encourage you to first make a trip to your local thrift shops and secondhand stores. You never know what hidden gems you might uncover – whether it’s a vintage-inspired serving tray, a set of whimsical ceramic houses, or a pair of gilded candle holders. With a little bit of imagination and a willingness to think outside the box, those thrifted finds can become the centerpiece of your holiday decor, imbuing your home with a sense of charm, character, and nostalgia that money simply can’t buy.
Happy thrifting, and Merry Christmas!
